About The Complete Father Brown Mysteries By Author

Father Brown is a fictional Roman Catholic priest and amateur sleuth created in the early 20th century by English novelist G. K. Chesterton. Father Brown is featured in a series of short stories where he solves mysteries and crimes using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature. The character was loosely based by Chesterton on Father John O'Connor (1870–1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.Chesterton portrays Father Brown as a short, stumpy Roman Catholic priest, with shapeless clothes, a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human evil. In "The Head of Caesar" he is "formerly priest of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London". He makes his first appearance in the story "The Blue Cross" and continues to appear throughout forty-eight short stories in five volumes, with two more stories discovered and published posthumously, often assisted in his crime-solving by the reformed criminal M. Hercule Flambeau.

The Complete Father Brown Mysteries By Edward Gibbon Illustrated G K Chesterton 9781542333511 Books Reviews

Very disappointing. Would not recommend this book to anyone.

No table of contents. 2-1/2 pages blank (required text missing) in the middle of one story. "Illustrated" with blurry reproductions of 18th century paintings that have no relevance to the stories. Same illustrations used repeatedly throughout the book. To what end... other than attempt to provide "eye candy"? I requested a refund and ordered one of the other Complete Father Brown Mysteries that sells.
I have most of the Fr. Brown series in physical (ow!) books, and I have the free "complete" kindle version.
Then I read a review by "mystery girl," which mentioned 2 tales I never even heard of. BTW, thanks mystery girl; I think I love you.

M.G. recommended this annotated version, and I got it despite some unfavorable reviews concerning the user-friendliness of the table of contents. I didn't have any problems with it. So, along with the new love of my life(mystery girl), I recommend this edition for all Father Brown fans. I wonder how many of us there are. Should we keep this series to ourselves? Or should we let the rest of the world in on it?

This dumpy-looking, nearsighted, clumsy priest is as great a detective as Holmes or Dr. Thorndyke. Then there is the fascinating prose of G.K. Chesterton which paints Daliesque images before Dali painted them.

Okay, the secret is out. Any fan of intelligent mysteries who hasn't discovered Fr. Brown is depriving him/herself of a unique experience.
I watch Father Brown mysteries on Public TV and we love them because they are quiet, beautifully filmed and fun. These stories, though quite different from those told on TV, have some of the same advantages. The beauty is in the writing. Some of the passages are exquisite. The stories are short, the character of Father Brown is different from the TV version and each story is a perfect gem. Brown in the stories is an almost supernatural thinker, solving the crimes quickly after everybody else has given up.
Although this edition from AB (or ABCD) Classics claims to be complete, it is missing one story "The Vampire of the Village." It is, nevertheless, a large collection, but it will disappoint completists and those who believe the word "complete" means that everything is included and nothing should be missing.

The original FB stories vary in quality, but are mostly very well done and quite entertaining. The title character differs considerably from his most recent television depiction, as do those with whom he associates, and readers should not expect to recreate their viewing experience by reading these tales. The police are less antagonistic toward this FB and, in later tales, he is actually highly regarded for his detecting abilities. These tales take place much earlier than the TV series; it was set in the 1950's, but these stories pretty much reflect the various dates of their composition.
